FREE: Ascot Selections & Staking Plan: Wednesday 8th March

Saturday was a strip out, just one of those days with Utgard Loki $19.00 when posted into $8.00 on the day and goes down a lip, which would of meant a positive result for the day. Fickle old game this one at times. We front up and go again, a few races I’m interested in getting involved in at this midweek Ascot meeting.

Race 1 – 1:40PM CROWN TOWERS PLATE (1000 METRES)

3. Givemeonereason – 5. Eyeshadow – 4. Star Power – 7. Rathmine Lady

Eyeshadow

Think a couple of the debutants look the part here.

Givemeonereason is from the powerful S.Miller yard, trialled up very nicely at Lark Hill on the 21st of Feb, looks very smart. Displayed excellent gate speed from a wide draw, will push forward from 6 and can take up the running. No betting proposition on debut at $1.45.

Eyeshadow is another I thought trialled particularly well. Was given a very soft time of it last time around when leading them up at Belmont. The horse that grabbed her there debuted on Saturday in the Listed Supremacy Stakes and ran a really nice race. Can challenge Givemeonereason for the front here and think she looks like a filly with ability. 1×3

Race 2 – 2:15PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

1. Pale Rider – 4. Catalpa – 2. First Missile – 5. Rommel’s Jeuney

Pale Rider

Pale Rider looks the class runner here. 3rd in the Listed Fairetha last pre over this distance only 1.4L adrift of It’sarayday following a maiden blitzkreig by 5L. Does have the 60.5kgs to lug, but 1st up last prep over an unsuitable 1000m finished 4th behind Bitofmerit, Buzzoom and Champagne Dame. The recent trial was okay, looked to need it but from the gate here Azzopardi should be able to park him on the back of Rommel’s Jeuney and Mussa and his class in this field can prevail, hard to hold out late.

2 Units WIN

Catalpa

Was a massive run last start in a CL3 at Pinjarra. Parked deep throughout from barrier 11 (on what was a relatively gentle tempo) and still ran through the line strongly for 2nd in the race fastest L600/400 and 200 splits. The form from the race has held up too, Arracity has since run 2nd in a CL3 since and Buster Bash went to a Saturday race and ran 3rd. Smaller field suits here, can camp off them and with that big turn of foot he’s got, you can count on him and the Pontiff to be chiming in late. Should see $3.00+ to save.

Race 3 – 2:54PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Kohli – 2. Time Scale – 5. Snippy Miss – 4. Beau Zoom

Kohli

4th run in WA. 1st run was great in a strong CL5, before being backed off the map and unlucky behind subsequent winner Phoneme in another really strong ratings race, before last start went up to the 1650, carrying 60kgs from barrier 12 was off the track for the entire trip in a race run at a very genuine tempo (11L faster than benchmark to the 600). Was entitled to weaken, now gets back to his pet trip of 1400m, a lovely draw in a small field to stalk the speed with some cover, I think he looks hard to beat off a really strong platform.

Time Scale

The 1400m is the big query for Time Scale. Comes out of a fast run 1200m where Carbery was really intent to roll forward, was made to sit in the breeze. Weakened late when trying to grab the horse that lead although that horse has since won in Saturday grade. Some real aggression and Carbery can probably find the top here, which increases her chances, but how strong is she capable of being late given she’s predominately been a high speed, 1000m mare. Rare territory for the Miller stable, gives me the feel of last chance saloon.

1 Unit WIN

Race 4 – 3:34PM BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

3. My Boy Chris – 5. Lexington City – 6. Better In Kit – 10. Garden Quartz

Race 5 – 4:10PM GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Nuhad – 1. Prince Devoutly – 5. Love Drunk Baby – 7. Butterfly House

Nuhad

Nuhad was huge last start. Breezed outside a hot tempo (5L faster than benchmark to the 600m), easily beat off the leader and was holding all at bay at the finish bar the winner who got the PR of all PR’s. Holly can lead this race on her ear with no other genuine early toe engaged and she can run them into the ground here. Keen and at the current price, I have her marked $2.70 and she is my best of the day.

3 Units WIN

Race 6 – 4:45PM MORLEY GROWERS MARKET HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

5. Penny’s Afield – 2. Many Mansions – 6. Drama Free – 3. Keeper Sweet

Race 7 – 5:20PM SEACORP HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

1. Black Fantasy – 7. Piccola Signora – 4. Fear The Wind – 8. Sparkling Jewel
