FREE: Ascot Selections & Staking Plan: Friday 15th April

9 races to tuck into at Ascot on Good Friday, highlighted by a terrific feature in the Listed Majorie Charleson for the fillies and mares over the 1200m. Rail goes out 2m the entire, forecast to be a perfect day for racing.

Race 1 – 1:08PM MUMM CHAMPAGNE HANDICAP (2200 METRES)

5. Frequent Friar – 3. Vevinsky – 1. Sheikh It – 2. Cafe Nera

Race 2 – 1:43PM HEINEKEN 3 MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

10. Alsephina – 6. Silver Bugg – 11. Celtic Grey – 9. Snip’s Rock

Alsephina

Another debutant here being wheeled out by Grant Williams, and thought she has trialled like a filly with her fair share of ability around some nice horses in Border Force, Flower In The Wind and easily had the measure of 2nd favourite Silver Bugg at her most recent hitout, where she chased hard with the handbrake on. She’s gradually improved with each trial at how she leaves the barriers and from 1, Chris should be able to park her leaders back and from there I think she’s going to get a lovely cushy run at her first trip to the races to be taking this out on debut.

Silver Bugg

$5.00 is enough of a price to be chopping out on Silver Bugg, who has the raceday experience on her side. Thought she has been really good at both runs back this campaign and will just need some luck in finding a spot from barrier 7 to be thereabouts at the finish, the form around her is more than good enough.

Race 3 – 2:18 PM MRS MAC’S MAIDEN (1400 METRES)

8. Aztec Gold – 1. The Admiral – 3. Serviceman – 11. Snip Of Glory

Aztec Gold

Have always had a bit of time for this horse who has shown glimpses without being able to put it all together in her career so far. The recent trial under a tight hold for Carbery was a really nice piece of work, and he’s decided to stick with her here, when he would have had the option to ride a number of these in this race. Carbery needs only a bit of luck to find a spot from an awkward draw in 8, and in a very evenly rated maiden, double figures is enough to be having something on her here.

1 Unit WIN

The Admiral

Interesting maiden runner the ex-Victorian who has since joined the Simon Miller camp. Looking back through her Victorian form, it’s actually reads extremely well for this event, she’s run 3rd behind Butter Chicken (subsequently Group 2 placed) and 3rd behind Pal D’Oro (since won at Sandown midweek and at Caulfield). He now finds himself in a lowly WA maiden, in a powerful camp with one of the best jockeys in the state taking the ride. I thought his only public appearance at the trials in WA was the work of a horse that wouldn’t be a maiden for much longer, even from the gate my gut tells me he may just be too good for these, wouldn’t be surprised to see a flurry of money for him tomorrow, the market will be an interesting watch.

1 Unit WIN

Race 4 – 2:52PM MORLEY GROWERS MARKET HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

6. Penny’s Afield – 3. Albukhturi – 1. First Missile – 7. Special Picture

Race 5 – 3:28PM AMELIA PARK LODGE HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

4. Birdieagle – 1. Bambun Boy – 7. Big Swoop – 2. Comealilbitcloser

Birdieagle

I thought this horse’s win last start was terrific to break his maiden. On the back of a horse taking him nowhere, had to come 4 deep at the 600m to get into the race and once he balanced up, he took them easily and was just as strong through the line. A really big, long striding type, he profiles to me like 1800m and potentially even further is going to be right in his wheelhouse moving forward. Think he can sit midfield and be too strong for his opposition at the pointy end to put two in a line.

1.5 Units WIN

Race 6 – 3:58PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

7. Madam Kisses – 8. Paeroa Lad – 3. Critical Altitude – 6. Strakin

Race 7 – 4:30PM BELHUS RACING STABLES HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. Bourbon Beau – 5. Dream Evil – 6. Nobelium – 10. Horizon

Bourbon Beau

I think Anne King has worked out this galloper. Has always flashed above average ability but has let himself down in the past with how fiercely he can race at times. He raced in super touch at the back end of his last preparation in better races than this, was settling far better in those races and the most recent trial hitout (when really lengthening through the line under a tight hold) was a terrific piece of work and signalled to me that he’s come back off a 4 month freshen an even better horse. Kennedy may need a little luck from the barrier to find a position but think there’s enough gaps for him to tuck in from where they will want to settle in the run.

1 Unit WIN

Race 8 – 5:05PM MARJORIE CHARLESON CLASSIC (1200 METRES)

7. Searchin Roc’s – 4. This’ll Testya – 3. Amasenus – 8. Buzzoom

Searchin Roc’s

This is a very exciting race due to the terrific field that has assembled.

Searchin Roc’s has been targeted at this race fresh, and the most recent trial, I can’t put it any simpler, was absolutely outstanding. Kristy Bennett has her travelling along beautifully under double wraps, and when Faithfull presses go on Liwa to her outside, with very little urgings she picks up and wants to go with her to the line. I think she is a very exciting filly. Can sit midfield for Azzopardi, ideally hold the back of race favourite Buzzoom (a task made easier by the scratching of Chantorque) and should get a genuine enough tempo with This’ll Testya rolling along up top to sit back and launch. Keen.

3 Units WIN

This’ll Testya

The enigma that is This’ll Testya, if she was to reproduce her performance in the Cyril Flower here, with no anticipated pressure up top you’d be hard pressed to argue against her winning again, but that is one big “if”. One thing is for sure, Mitch Pateman knows her better than anyone and is doing a terrific job at managing her quirks in order to get the best out of her. Holly should be able to roll along in front here and with that added freshness in her legs I think if she’s her best self on the day it’s going to take a special filly to gun her down. Don’t want to be losing on her.

1 Unit WIN

Amasenus the forgotten horse and is very dangerous on the back of a horse that will take her into the race. Has been freshened since a flop in the Cyril Flower when nothing went right for her, but her 1st up run prior in the Scenic Blast when finishing less than a length adrift of Hot Zed and beating home Miss Conteki was terrific, what price would we be looking at for those runners here?

Race 9 – 5:37PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

9. Dash Doll – 2. Costa Del Santo – 7. Al Magico – 1. Phoneme
