Four elite first round women’s singles matches at 2024 Wimbledon

The singles draw was unveiled on the men’s and women’s side on Friday. Let’s take a look at four very intriguing women’s first round matches for the third major of the year.
(1) Iga Swiatek–POL vs. Sofia Kenin–USA
This fascinating matchup features two grand slam champions. Iga Swiatek of P0land won the 2020 French Open, the 2022 French Open, the 2022 United States Open, 2023 French Open, and 2024 French Open. Kenin’s grand slam title came at the 2020 Australian Open. Head-to-head, Swiatek has won the two previous matches. The first match came in the final of the 2020 French Open, which Swiatek won 6-4, 6-1. The second came in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open, which Swiatek won 7-6, 6-2.
(16) Victoria Azarenka–BLR vs. Sloane Stephens–USA
Like Swiatek and Kenin, the match between Azarenka and Stephens features two grand slam champions. Azarenka won the 2012 and 2013 Wimbledon, and Stephens won the 2017 United States Open. Azarenka and Stephens have battled each other nine times, with Azarenka winning five times. Their first three matches were at the Australian Open, and were three matches won by Azarenka.
(21) Elina Svitolina–UKR vs. Magda Linette–POL
Here we have a battle of two grand slam semifinalists. Linette reached the final four of the 2023 Australian Open and Svitolina reached the final four of the United States Open and Wimbledon in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2023. Svitolina has won two of three matches head to head. Linette’s lone win came in the second round of Wimbledon in 2021, 6-3, 6-4.
(28) Dayana Yastremska–UKR vs. Nadia Podoroska–ARG
This matchup features Yastremska, the 2024 Australian Open semifinalist, and Podoroska, the 2020 French Open semifinalist. This will be their first head-to-head meeting.
