On the second final day of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Team Australia came through with two medals– a silver medal in women’s high jump, and a bronze medal in men’s basketball.
In the women’s high jump, Nicola McDermott of North Gosford became the second Australian woman all-time to win an Olympic medal in the women’s high jump with her silver medal on Saturday. She joined Michele Brown of New South Wales, Australia, who finished second at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
McDermott initially won qualification alongside Marija Vujovic of Montenegro, as the two were the only ones to clear 1.95 metres without a miss. In the finals, McDermott recorded a jump of 2.02, an Oceania Athletics Association record. Mariya Lasitskene of the Russian Olympic Committee won the gold medal at 2.04 metres. Yaroslava Mahuchuikh won the bronze medal with a jump of two metres. McDermott earned a medal by .04 metres as Iryna Herashchenko of the Ukraine finished in fourth place with a jump of 1.98 metres.
Meanwhile, it men’s basketball, for the first time ever, Australia won an Olympic medal. In the bronze medal game, Patty Mills of the San Antonio Spurs was marvelous, as he scored 42 points in a convincing 107-93 win over Slovenia.
Mills was one of five players to reach double digits in scoring. He was joined by Joe Ingles (16 points), Jock Landale (14 points), Dante Exum (12 points), and Matisse Thybulle (11 points).
