The Cleveland Cavaliers have named Mike Gansey of Olmsted Falls, Ohio as their new general manager according to the Associated Press on Wednesday. Gansey was initially the Cavaliers assistant general manager before the promotion. Cleveland’s previous general manager, Koby Altman of Brooklyn, New York was promoted from general manager to president of basketball operations on January 11.

There is no doubt that the Cavaliers have exceeded expectations with their balanced attack in 2021-22, as they have a record of 35 wins and 23 losses, which is tied for third place in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia 76ers. However there are some legitimate questions whether or not Gansey and Altman have done enough to warrant the promotions. Both are only 39 years of age.

One must need to realize, the Cavaliers have not won a playoff series without LeBron James in their lineup since 1992-93. That streak has continued since James left the Cavaliers for the Los Angeles Lakers prior to the 2018-19 NBA season.

Altman and Gansey need to definitely be praised for turning the Cavaliers franchise around. In the three years prior to this year Cleveland had a terrible record of 60 wins and 159 losses. However it could take time for this Cavaliers unit to win the games that matter most–and those are the ones in the postseason.

Gainsey meanwhile had been the Cavaliers assistant general manager since 2017. At the National Collegiate Athletic Association level, Gainsey was a forward with St. Bonaventure from 2001 to 2003, and with West Virginia from 2003 to 2006. He also won a gold medal as a player for the United States in men’s basketball at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey.
