NRL: Reece Walsh Escapes Suspension After Hair-Pull Incident Against Knights

17 hours ago - Sportingbase NRL: Reece Walsh Escapes Suspension After Hair-Pull Incident Against Knights Image
Brisbane Broncos star Reece Walsh has avoided suspension after his bizarre hair-pulling incident during Saturday night’s fiery clash with the Newcastle Knights.

Walsh was sin-binned during the opening half after grabbing the hair of Knights winger Dom Young during a heated melee, but the NRL Match Review Committee has opted against issuing a ban, instead handing the Broncos fullback a financial penalty.

Walsh Hit With Fine, Not Suspension

The Match Review Committee charged Walsh with a Grade 1 Contrary Conduct offence.

As it was a first offence in this category, the charge carries a $1,000 fine, allowing Walsh to remain available for Brisbane’s next match. Had the incident been graded as a Grade 2 offence, Walsh would have faced an automatic one-match suspension.

The decision will come as a relief to the Broncos, who are fighting to keep their finals hopes alive during the closing weeks of the regular season.

Bizarre Moment Sparks Sin Bin

The incident occurred after tensions boiled over following a tackle involving Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam and Knights centre Dom Young.

As players from both sides converged, Knights forward Jermaine McEwen raced into the altercation before Walsh grabbed Young by the hair, prompting referee Grant Atkins to intervene.

Explaining the decision, Atkins told Walsh:

“You’ve deliberately pulled his hair. You’re on report for the hair pull.”

Walsh immediately questioned the ruling, arguing he was reacting to the chaos around him, but the referee stood by his decision and sent him to the sin bin.

McEwen Also Penalised

Walsh was not the only player sanctioned following the melee.

Knights back-rower Jermaine McEwen also received a Grade 1 Contrary Conduct charge for his role in escalating the confrontation and was issued the same $1,000 fine. McEwen was later hit with a second Contrary Conduct charge for a separate incident involving Ezra Mam later in the match.

Rare Judiciary Decision

The hair pull was one of the more unusual incidents seen in the NRL this season.

Fox League commentators questioned whether it was the first player ever to be sin-binned specifically for pulling an opponent’s hair. While similar offences have previously resulted in penalties and fines—including Canberra forward Hudson Young earlier this season—the circumstances surrounding the melee led officials to take stronger action on the field.

Ultimately, the judiciary determined a financial penalty was sufficient, meaning Walsh will be free to line up for Brisbane next week despite the “brain snap” moment that briefly threatened to derail his season.
