Penrith’s premiership hopes may not have suffered the fatal blow first feared.
Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo will avoid immediate surgery on the pectoral injury he suffered against the New Zealand Warriors, leaving the door open for him to return during the 2026 NRL season.
The club confirmed scans had revealed the extent of the injury but did not provide an official return date.
“Penrith Panthers can confirm co-captain Isaah Yeo will not require immediate surgery after suffering a pectoral injury against the Warriors on Friday night,” the Panthers said.
“Scans have revealed the extent of the injury, with Yeo to commence rehabilitation in a bid to return to the field during the 2026 NRL season.
“His progress will continue to be monitored throughout his rehabilitation.”

Yeo avoids worst-case outcome
Yeo left the field during the first half of Penrith’s 28-12 loss to the Warriors after suffering the injury.
The 2024 Golden Boot winner immediately appeared in significant pain, prompting concerns that he had completely torn his pectoral muscle.
A full rupture requiring immediate surgery would almost certainly have ended Yeo’s NRL season and placed his availability for Australia’s end-of-year World Cup campaign in serious doubt.
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary admitted after the match that the initial outlook was concerning.
“It doesn’t look great,” Cleary said while the club awaited scan results.
The subsequent diagnosis is therefore a substantial relief for Penrith, although it does not guarantee Yeo will return before the finals.
Reports have suggested the 31-year-old could face a rehabilitation period of approximately four to six weeks. That timeframe has not been included in Penrith’s official statement and should be treated as a projection rather than a confirmed return date.
Yeo ruled out of Roosters blockbuster
Yeo will miss Thursday night’s top-of-the-table showdown against the Sydney Roosters at CommBank Stadium.
Penrith and the Roosters both sit on 36 competition points, with the Panthers holding first place through their superior points differential. The Warriors remain close behind on 34 points.
The result could have a significant impact on the minor premiership race.
Yeo’s absence leaves a major hole in the middle of Penrith’s attack and defence. His ability to connect Nathan Cleary with the Panthers’ outside backs is a fundamental part of the team’s system, while his workload and decision-making strengthen the defensive line.
Former Penrith prop Spencer Leniu, now playing for the Roosters, described Yeo as the heartbeat of his old club.
“I think it’s a massive loss. He’s the heartbeat of their team,” Leniu said.
“He was the heartbeat when I was there. He was a captain, and he’s obviously the captain there now.
“When a lot of experience like that goes off the field, you definitely notice it.”
Who replaces Yeo at lock?
Lindsay Smith is the leading candidate to wear the No.13 jersey against the Roosters.
Smith has previously shifted into the lock role when Yeo has been rested or unavailable, making him the most natural replacement within Ivan Cleary’s squad.
Penrith could also adjust Yeo’s responsibilities across several players rather than asking one forward to replicate everything he provides.
Nathan Cleary may assume greater control of the Panthers’ attacking shape, while Mitch Kenny could take on more responsibility around the ruck.
Isaiah Papali’i, Liam Henry and Scott Sorensen offer additional options through the middle, but none possess Yeo’s complete combination of ball-playing, defensive endurance and leadership.
Leniu nevertheless backed his former club’s depth to respond.
“Knowing Penrith, they’re a world-class team and they’ll just have that next-man-up mentality,” he said.
“They’ve been doing it for the last couple of years. They’ve filled those voids when it’s come around, and it’ll be no different next week if he’s out.”
Premiership return remains possible
Penrith’s statement has deliberately avoided establishing a firm return date.
A four-week absence would potentially allow Yeo to return around the beginning of the finals, while a six-week recovery could push his comeback deeper into the postseason.
The Panthers are unlikely to rush their co-captain, particularly given the risk of aggravating the injury and turning a partial tear into a complete rupture.
Penrith’s ladder position provides some protection, but its remaining schedule will test the club’s depth. After facing the Roosters, the Panthers are due to meet Melbourne, Canterbury and the Wests Tigers.
The injury also places more pressure on Nathan Cleary, whose long-term future remains a major priority for the club. Penrith has already opened discussions aimed at keeping Nathan and Ivan Cleary away from the open market.
For now, the most important news is that Yeo’s season remains alive.
Penrith still faces several weeks without arguably the NRL’s best lock, but the possibility of having its co-captain back for another premiership campaign represents a dramatically better outcome than the club initially feared.
