LeBron James knows where he’ll play next season—but the rest of the basketball world is still waiting to find out. Could one of the greatest free agency decisions in NBA history be getting even closer?
Speaking publicly for the first time since announcing his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, James refused to reveal his next destination while teasing fans that the announcement will be worth the wait.
The four-time NBA champion made the comments during an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York, where an 11-year-old fan asked the question everyone wanted answered.
Rather than naming his next team, James smiled and admitted he wasn’t ready to make his decision public.

“It has to conclude before the season starts.”
Silver also rejected suggestions that the NBA itself had frozen the trade.
“We didn’t pause the trade. The teams decided not to complete it until they understood the outcome of the investigation.”
The investigation began in September 2025 following allegations that the Clippers circumvented the NBA salary cap by arranging an endorsement agreement between Leonard and environmental company Aspiration, in which Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested.
Investigative journalist Pablo Torre alleged Leonard received substantial payments through the company without carrying out meaningful work, raising questions over whether the arrangement effectively provided additional compensation outside his NBA contract.
The Clippers have consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintain they were themselves victims of fraud involving former Aspiration executive Joe Sanberg.
The uncertainty has already delayed one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history.
Toronto and the Clippers reached an agreement that would send Leonard back to the Raptors, but the deal has not been completed because Toronto does not want to inherit any potential penalties that could arise from the NBA’s findings.
Silver declined to comment on the substance of the investigation but reiterated the league understands clubs need certainty before training camp begins.
That timeline is welcome news for both franchises.
The Raptors are eager to complete the trade and begin integrating Leonard into their roster, while the Clippers are hoping to finally move on from an investigation that has overshadowed the past 10 months.
Whatever the final outcome, the decision could have major ramifications.
If the NBA finds the Clippers breached salary cap rules, the league has the power to impose significant penalties ranging from financial sanctions to the loss of draft picks.
If the Clippers are cleared, one of the biggest trades of the offseason is expected to proceed shortly afterwards.
For now, Adam Silver has provided the strongest indication yet that the basketball world won’t have to wait much longer.
The investigation that has dominated NBA headlines for almost a year is finally approaching its finish line.
