Toby Greene has completed his move to Geelong as an unrestricted free agent on a three-year deal, with AFL.com.au confirming the former GWS captain’s paperwork on the opening day of the 2026 free-agency window and the Giants receiving a second-round compensation pick currently sitting at No.26.
According to AFL.com.au, Greene, 33, played 282 games and kicked 450 goals for Greater Western Sydney, winning two best and fairests and earning All-Australian honours three times. Callum Twomey reported on X that Geelong lodged the free-agency paperwork for a three-year deal.
Club statements
Geelong Cats said Greene has signed as an unrestricted free agent until at least the end of 2029. Cats football boss Andrew Mackie said: “Toby is a star of the competition, we have admired and respected him from afar and we’re looking forward to having him complement our current playing squad.” Mackie also welcomed Greene, his wife Georgia and daughter Isla to the club.
GWS Giants confirmed Greene’s departure and the second-round compensation selection currently listed as pick 26. Giants football boss Jason McCartney said: “Toby has been an incredible part of this football club for 15 years and we’ll never lose sight of what he’s given to the Giants,” adding the club respected his decision to return home to Victoria.
Free agency Day 1 context
Greene’s lodgement follows Carlton’s confirmed move for Joel Amartey — covered by TSB when the Blues lodged Amartey’s free-agency paperwork. AFL.com.au also reported paperwork for Kieren Briggs’ four-year unrestricted free-agency move from GWS to Richmond on Friday; TSB will cover that separately if needed.
Unconfirmed at package time: exact annual dollars on Greene’s three-year deal (not stated in the AFL.com.au or club confirmation notes cited above).
