Rosehill hosted a cracking day of racing on Saturday,  headlined by a G1 Tancred Stakes to remember. Our analyst has black booked a pair of runners that look set to improve getting out in trip after great runs in two separate 2000m races.

Portland

The imported stayer looks one to be following getting out to 2400m and beyond after a nice 3L 3rd in the G2 Neville Selwood over 2000m. He was forced to settle at the rear of the small field from the wide gate and was still strung up all over heels from the top of the straight to the 250m. He went straight past hyped import Barnavara over the final 100m. I would love to see him back up in the G2 Chairman’s Quality over 2600m at Randwick next week assuming he comes through the run well, where he should eat up the extra 600m and get potential map upside from a better gate.

Storm Leopard

I thought the Hayes 3yo turned in an awesome Derby trial winning the G2 Tulloch by 1.8L eased down the final 100m. He settled midfield in a race where Shangri La Boy set a cracking tempo. He quickly worked his way to 2nd and had the arduous role of carting the field up to the tearaway leader from the 600m. He didn’t shirk his task going straight past the Waterhouse/Bott colt and putting a gap on the rest.

Green Spaces is still the horse to beat in the Derby for me but I will be happy to take a 2-way play with this guy if the price is right. It’s been six years since a 3yo has done the G2 Tulloch/Aus Derby double but there were 4 consecutive years where the winner came from that race from 2017-2020 with Quick Thinker being the latest. I like what he showed in what was a savage 2000m race.
