The replays and sectional times have been reviewed from Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick. Our analyst has Black Booked a Freedman filly that endured a tough on-speed run in the Arrowfield and a Waller mare to look out for over a mile in the spring.

Marhoona

The Galaxy and Golden Slipper winner was outstanding finishing 2.3L 4th to Tempted in the Arrowfield after getting no luck from the outside gate. Lloyd pressed forward on her but was posted 3 wide without cover in a hot go for the lead. She was no match for Tempted when it counted but the fact that she was able to hold off the likes of Cafe Florian, Skyhook and Beadman getting much softer runs was admirable. She’s likely to go the paddock now after 4 runs for the prep but there will no doubt be a nice race in her for the spring and she still seems to be underrated.

Lady Shenandoah

The Waller mare hasn’t won for over a year and she does require the right set up in terms of gate and map but her run in the Queen of the Turf was top notch. It was a surprise to see McDonal roll forward on her to settle 4L 2nd to Pride of Jenni doing her thing. This left her in the unwanted position of carting the field up to the tearaway leader up the straight. She cruised up to her at the 300m and looked the winner before being gunned down by the impressive Idle Flyer, who had a much softer run a pair further back. We often see them completely throw in the towel when they get to Jenni in that fashion, like Birdman in the Aus Cup, but the way she continued to put in and hold her margin on Treasurethe Moment from the top of the straight was a great effort.

She would have plenty of options for the spring but you’d think they would be now set on peaking over 1400-1600m. She would appeal in races like the Invitation and Empire Rose with the right set up.
