Best Of The Best: Our Wednesday Specials – Gosford 8/9

Midweek metro racing heads to Gosford this week to give the Kensington surface a break. Gosford is a tight track with a short straight, so with the rail out 3m for the entire circuit, we can expect some on pace bias. We’ve picked out a few runners with enough early gate speed and the form to expect solid performances from.

Gosford Race 1

Happy to take on short priced favourite Kooled from the Hawkes yard. This runner returns from a spell after a failed Melbourne campaign and maps to get right back in the field. Instead I’ve picked out a pair of runners at double figure odds with gate speed that we can hedge on.

Dufresne

  • Trainer: A Cummings
  • Jockey: K McEvoy
  • Barrier: 2

Dufresne steps out here after a solid 2nd at Kensington on debut. After showing solid speed at the trials, the Hinchinbrook gelding jumped well and sat 2nd but couldn’t reel in the tearaway leader. He drops back from 1300m to 1200m which may be the reason for the price but I am happy to back Anthony Cummings’ judgement and love the fact that McEvoy sticks.

Wolfburn

  • Trainer: B Baker
  • Jockey: J Parr
  • Barrier: 7

This Snitzel colt also ran 2nd last start but in a strong maiden on this track behind Beep Test. He led on that day and should be up on the speed again here.

Gosford Race 3 – Kuzco Lad

  • Trainer: Waterhouse & Bott
  • Jockey: R Bayless
  • Barrier: 7

Kuzco Lad steps up to 1900m for the first time after finishing 2nd behind Off Shaw at Kensington over 1550m. Off Shaw has since run 2nd at Kensington, where nothing went his way, and then backed it up getting beaten on the post in Saturday grade a few days later. Being from the Waterhouse yard, I love that he steps up 450m with fitness on his side in a race where he shouldn’t be bothered too much in front.

Gosford Race 5 – Park Avenue

  • Trainer: Richard & Michael Freedman
  • Jockey: J Van Overmeire
  • Barrier: 4

This fellow looks to be the class runner of the day whose connections will no doubt have some nicer races picked out on the proviso that he runs up to expectations here. Last prep he followed back-to-back victories with a 3rd behind talented 3yos Verne and Into the Congo. That form is far superior to what he faces here.

He looks to have returned from a spell in fine order with two trials, winning his latest and rubbing shoulders with the highly promising De An Andretti a month ago. Looks to be the bet of the day.
