Belmont Selections & Staking Plan: Saturday 3rd July

Aquanita/Oaks Day at Belmont this Saturday and what should be dry track racing come another 24 hours of drying out. Cracking card, really excited and the write-ups are back after a uni-driven hiatus.

Race 1 – 11:59AM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

2. Bollinger Boy – 3. Brother Paddy – 5. Run D’Affaire Run – 6. Hip Wiggle

Bollinger Boy

Horse is very low flying for the Adam Durrant yard. Was strung up along the fence looking for a split at the crucial stage last start when unlucky not to have gone to the line with Street Fair, who gets a handy little weight swing on here. The start prior was the best closer of the race behind I’m Pretty and Speedy Miss, who he meets here 1.5kgs for the better. Should land on the back of Speedy Miss in the run and in a wide-open race where I have knocks on every other runner, I’m happy to have something on big Dougy.

1 Unit WIN

Race 2 – 12:39PM BREAST CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE OF WA PLATE (1000 METRES)

9. Wuhan Warrior – 12. No Dice – 1. Beads – 4. Nights Mystery

Race 3 – 1:18PM THE WALKER FAMILY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

5. Dunbar – 8. Devine Beast – 10. Real Grace – 1. Agent Jay

Race 4 – 1:53PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

7. Brooklyn Pier – 5. We’ve Got Dreams – 8. Lipstick Flickers – 3. Amasenus

Brooklyn Pier

Took a giant step up in grade last start (and was very well commissioned) up to the 1200m and was far from disgraced and think he is even better suited back to the 1000m here. If we go 2 starts back his 1st up win over the trip rated incredibly well in very fast time and even though he’s drawn wide here, I think a positive ride from Stevie Parnham can land him one off outside Lipstick Flickers, from there he’s going to get a lovely run and the chasers the likes of Miss Frost and Amasenus are going to have their work cut out to gun him down. Little unknown is the soft track particularly after the rain we had last night but looked to get through it without issue in a trial, think it will be drying come Saturday regardless.

2 Units WIN

We’ve Got Dreams

Hasn’t been at her best thus far, but this is the best suited race for her all prep. Drops down in grade to what is a much easier field, gets back onto (what should be by Saturday, this part pending) a dry track (doesn’t go a yard in rain-affected) and a map where she can stroll to the top and nothing will give her any pressure. With the claim for Laqdar she gets in with the same weight she carried last start in a 78+ and I absolutely love him on a front runner, rates them beautifully. If she can find something close to her best again, she can be staving them off at a big price (just hoping for a dry track come Saturday).

1 Unit WIN if track a Good 4 on the day.

Lipstick Flickers is a good horse resuming. Loved the trial but don’t love that for a horse that has had a well documented injury history he is backing up from a Monday trial into a Saturday race? 1000m also looks a tad short but Pike gets a really nice stalking ride on the back of WGD. Races well fresh but peaks 1 or 2 runs after that traditionally, good lead in race.

Race 5 – 2:25PM BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

1. Timely Outburst – 3. Jedi Mind – 8. Alpha And Omega – 7. Speed Dream

Timely Outburst

All I can say is, this is a great use of Holly Watson from SJ. Nicole hasn’t done much wrong with her, but I love this jockey change for this. 3kg claim for arguably the most in-form apprentice in the state. TO has proven she is a very smart filly, and all the form around her backs this up. The Spruiker, Graceful Girl and more recently Vane Tempest, the new challenge is the 1400m, and there’s no doubt in my mind she will get it. There isn’t a great deal of tactical speed in this, and at worse Holly lands her in the breeze but ideally gets across and we get to see her take the front and lead on the rail for the first time in her career. She’s tough, she grinds out wins and just looks superbly placed again by SJ here, something only amplified by the claim and the jockey change.

*Been tipped by a market moving WA tipster this morning hence the big move $2.40 when preview was written into $1.90, should get back out to close to $2.40 mark by the jump, hold fire until then*

4 Units WIN if she gets back out to $2.40+

Jedi Mind is a nice horse who ran a last start close 3rd behind The Spruiker (who has subsequently won again) when very unlucky not to have won or at least been right in that finish. Horse still does a bit wrong and has plenty of scope for improvement. Should position up in a nice spot midfield for Parnham, can he run past TO though? The testing material, I feel.

Race 6 – 3:05PM PENINSULA DINING ROOM HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

7. Comfort Me – 3. Excellent Dream – 5. Not To Be Mist – 8. Moschard

Error, group does not exist! Check your syntax! (ID: 9)

Race 7 – 3:35PM BELMONT OAKS (2000 METRES)

4. Baronova – 1. Sheza Chalmer – 2. Tri For Us – 9. Star Subject

Race 8 – 4:05PM AQUANITA STAKES (2000 METRES)

1. Kerman Rock – 7. Tena Koutou – 3. Crescent City – 4. Tradem’ In

Kerman Rock

In a pretty underwhelming field for a listed race, Kerman Rock provides plenty of interest from my perspective. Loved the run in the Guineas when he closed hard after being briefly chopped out at the top of the straight to finish only a length adrift of Sheza Chalmer. The key for me here is that I love that he is proven at a staying trip, if we go back to April he’s run a terrific 3rd in the WATC Derby only beaten a length behind Western Empire. The rest of these are queries at the trip, from 6 Lucy should be able to blend him in behind the front pair and he just looks a great bet for me at around that $4 mark.

2 Units WIN

Race 9 – 4:40PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

2. I’m Pretty – 14. Melarab – 3. Playing Marika – 13. Holy Ghost
