There is a crowded leaderboard after the second round of the 2020 Masters. However, among the five players at -9 is Australian Cameron Smith of Brisbane. Smith is tied with American major champions Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina, and Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky, along with Spain’s Jon Rahm, and Mexico’s Abraham Ancer.
This is the first time ever that the top three golfers in the world are tied for the lead at the midpoint of a major title. Johnson is first in the world, Rahm is second, and Thomas is third. Johnson won the 2016 U.S. Open, while Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship.
Another five players are one stroke back of the lead at -8. There you have 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed of San Antonio, Texas, American Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, Taiwan’s Cheng-tsung Pan, and South Korea’s Sung-jae Im.
Three Englishmen meanwhile are two strokes back at -7. There you have Olympic gold medalist and 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett, and Tommy Fleetwood.
A group of three are three back at -6. This trio consists of South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli, and Colombia’s Sebastian Munoz.
Only once has an Australian ever won the Masters before. That was back in 2013, when Adam Scott of Adelaide shot a four-round score of -9, to beat Angel Cabrera of Argentina in a playoff.
Smith is currently ranked 45th in the world. At 27 years of age, he has finished in the top five of a major twice before. In 2015, he was tied for fourth at the U.S. Open, and in 2018, he was tied for fifth at the Masters.
