Argentina will face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (home of the New York Jets and New York Giants of the National Football League). In the semifinals over the last 48 hours, Spain shutout France 2-0 from AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, and Argentina beat England 2-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
In Spain’s win over France, we once again saw greatness from Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, who is simply having a World Cup for the ages. He recorded his sixth clean sheet of the World Cup as he made three saves for the shutout.
In seven games, Simon has only given up one goal. That was in Spain’s 2-1 quarterfinal win over Belgium. However, one must realize that Simon has not been busy whatsoever. Due to a strong defensive strategy, Simon has only had to make nine saves in seven games. In Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria in the round of 32, Simon did not have to make a single save.
The Spanish goal scorers on Tuesday were Mikal Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. Oyarzabal scored in the 22nd minute on a penalty, and Porro added key insurance in the 58th minute.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, England had the 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left, but went to an ineffective defensive strategy that could not stop the Argentinian attack. Enzo Fernandez tied the game in the 85th minute, and then Lautaro Martinez scored the game-winner in the second minute of extra time in the second half.
Argentina has won three World Cup titles in the past. They previously won in 1978, 1986 and 2022. Spain has won the World Cup once. That came in 2010.
