AFL Team Lists: Melbourne Vs Geelong – The Biggest Betting Impacts From Team Lists

2 weeks ago - Sportingbase AFL Team Lists: Melbourne Vs Geelong – The Biggest Betting Impacts From Team Lists Image

The AFL team lists are in for Melbourne vs Geelong, with several key changes creating new betting opportunities ahead of tonight’s blockbuster at the MCG. Melbourne has been forced into multiple changes through injury, while Geelong welcomes back important experience despite losing one of its biggest midfield stars.

With player markets, line betting and totals often shifting once the final teams are confirmed, here are the biggest selection impacts punters should know before first bounce.

Biggest Ins – Melbourne

Harrison Petty

Petty returns to bolster Melbourne’s defence at a crucial time following several forced changes. His aerial ability should help combat Geelong’s dangerous forward line led by Patrick Dangerfield and Shannon Neale.

Tom McDonald

McDonald comes back into the side to provide another experienced target inside 50. With Melbourne losing Jake Melksham, expect McDonald to play a key role alongside Jacob van Rooyen, making him an interesting value option in the anytime goalscorer market.

Bailey Laurie

Laurie earns a recall and should add speed and pressure around Melbourne’s forward line. His return gives the Demons another player capable of creating scoring opportunities at ground level.

Biggest Outs – Melbourne

Jake Melksham

Melksham’s omission removes an experienced forward who has consistently hit the scoreboard this season. Melbourne will rely more heavily on Jacob van Rooyen, Kysaiah Pickett and Tom McDonald inside 50.

Caleb Windsor

Windsor’s absence takes away some outside run and ball use, increasing the workload on Trent Rivers, Ed Langdon and Harvey Langford through the middle of the ground.

Daniel Turner

Turner’s omission reduces Melbourne’s defensive flexibility and key-position depth against a Geelong side with multiple marking options.

Biggest Ins – Geelong

Mark Blicavs

Blicavs returns after missing last week’s win and immediately strengthens Geelong’s versatility. His ability to impact in the ruck, defence and midfield gives Chris Scott another valuable matchup option against Max Gawn and Melbourne’s taller players.

Tanner Bruhn

Bruhn returns to add another quality midfielder to Geelong’s engine room. His inclusion strengthens the Cats around stoppages and provides another player capable of winning contested possessions.

Biggest Outs – Geelong

Max Holmes

Holmes is Geelong’s biggest loss. One of the AFL’s elite running midfielders, his absence removes line-breaking speed and plenty of metres gained, placing greater responsibility on Bailey Smith, Tom Atkins and Mark Blicavs through the midfield.

Oliver Henry

Henry’s omission reduces Geelong’s forward depth, although the Cats still retain plenty of scoring power through Patrick Dangerfield, Shannon Neale, Gryan Miers and Bradley Close.

Early Betting Verdict

The biggest takeaway from the confirmed team lists is Melbourne’s depth being tested by several changes, while Geelong regains the versatility of Mark Blicavs and the inside-ball winning ability of Tanner Bruhn despite losing Max Holmes. The Cats appear to have covered their losses better on paper, particularly through the midfield and key-position stocks.

From a betting perspective, Bailey Smith’s disposal market becomes even more appealing without Holmes alongside him, while Patrick Dangerfield anytime goalscorer remains one of the standout player markets. Melbourne’s changes also strengthen the appeal of Geelong head-to-head and could make the Cats’ line worth consideration following the confirmed team selections.
