Sydney has confirmed several players were involved in an alleged Melbourne hotel incident now under police investigation days before the AFL finals.
Victoria Police is investigating a report of an alleged sexual assault at a Wellington Parade hotel in East Melbourne during the early hours of Monday, August 17.
The Swans were staying at the hotel after defeating Essendon by 36 points at the MCG on Sunday evening.
No players have been publicly identified and police have not announced any charges or arrests.
It is also important to stress that the club’s use of the word “involved” does not establish whether any players are accused of wrongdoing, witnesses or involved in another capacity.
Sydney Swans Release Brief Statement
Sydney acknowledged the situation on Monday but declined to provide further details while the investigation remains active.
“The Sydney Swans can confirm several players were involved in an alleged incident in Melbourne last night,” the club’s official statement read.
“The Swans have notified the AFL and relevant authorities and cannot provide further comment at this stage.”
The AFL has been informed, although the league has not publicly detailed whether it is conducting a separate investigation or waiting for information from Victoria Police.
Victoria Police Investigating Report
A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed investigators were examining a report concerning an alleged sexual assault.
“Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault in East Melbourne on 17 August,” the spokesperson said.
“The incident occurred at a hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of the morning.
“The exact circumstances are yet to be established and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.”
According to Nine’s initial report, police attended the hotel where the Sydney travelling party was staying.
Other reports described uniformed and plain-clothes officers entering the venue, with marked and unmarked police vehicles seen outside.
Those details establish that a significant police response occurred, but they do not establish what happened or the role played by any Swans personnel.
No Players Should Be Named Without Confirmation
At this stage, speculation surrounding individual players would be irresponsible.
The Swans have confirmed only that several players were involved in an alleged incident. Neither the club nor Victoria Police has named anyone, outlined individual roles or announced charges.
Until authorities release additional verified information, no conclusion should be drawn about criminal responsibility.
The distinction is particularly important because “involved” can describe alleged offenders, complainants, witnesses or people otherwise present during an incident.
Incident Comes Before AFL Finals
The investigation has emerged at a critical point in Sydney’s season.
The Swans’ victory over Essendon secured second position on the AFL ladder and guaranteed a home qualifying final with one home-and-away match remaining.
Sydney is scheduled to face North Melbourne in the final round before beginning its premiership campaign.
Football consequences are secondary to the police investigation, but uncertainty surrounding several members of the travelling party could affect the club’s preparation depending on what authorities establish.
For now, the known facts remain limited.
Police are investigating a report of an alleged sexual assault at the hotel, Sydney has confirmed several players were involved in an alleged incident and no individual has been charged or publicly identified.
Further reporting must remain within those boundaries until investigators or the club release more information.
