Josh Fraser was initially viewed as Carlton’s caretaker coach, but after orchestrating one of the AFL’s most remarkable mid-season turnarounds, the former No.1 draft pick is now a genuine contender for the club’s senior coaching role.
Following the Blues’ stunning 76-point demolition of reigning premiers Brisbane, Fraser has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Michael Voss permanently, with his transformation of Carlton becoming impossible to ignore.
From Caretaker to Frontrunner
When Fraser took over following Voss’ departure, Carlton sat 1-8 and languishing near the bottom of the ladder.
Since then, the Blues have surged to a 9-2 record under the interim coach, reviving their finals hopes and dramatically changing the mood around Ikon Park. The turnaround has convinced many within the game that Fraser deserves serious consideration for the full-time position.
Carlton’s football department has already invited Fraser to formally participate in the club’s coaching process, alongside external candidates including Corey Enright, Jaymie Graham and James Kelly.

Chasing a Rare Coaching Achievement
Should Fraser ultimately land the role, he would become just the second Carlton caretaker coach this century to be appointed permanently after taking over during the season.
The last was David Teague, who earned the position following an impressive interim stint in 2019. Carlton will be hoping Fraser’s appointment, if it happens, delivers longer-term success after Teague’s tenure ended following the 2021 season.
The Blues have been cautious throughout the process, determined to conduct a comprehensive search rather than making an emotional decision based solely on recent results.
Players Have Responded
One of Fraser’s biggest achievements has been the rapid improvement of Carlton’s younger players.
Harry Dean, Jagga Smith, Lachie Cowan and Talor Byrne have all flourished under the interim coach, while the Blues have adopted a more aggressive ball movement and team-oriented style.
Following Saturday night’s victory over Brisbane, Fraser received a standing ovation from Carlton supporters, while players embraced him after the final siren in another sign of the respect he has earned inside the club.

Despite the growing support, Fraser insists he has not yet decided whether he will officially apply for the position.
Speaking after the win over Brisbane, he confirmed a decision was imminent.
“This week I’ll come to a decision.”
“I feel like in this process, I’m learning so much about myself.”
“I’m almost convinced that you’re never a finished product in terms of being ready.”
His comments mark a notable shift from earlier in the season, when he repeatedly insisted he viewed himself only as a temporary caretaker and did not expect to be considered for the role permanently.
Decision Nears for Carlton
Carlton is expected to make its coaching appointment before the end of the season.
Whether the Blues opt for Fraser or another candidate, his interim tenure has significantly enhanced his coaching credentials.
