Geelong premiership forward Gryan Miers will not be joining West Coast, his manager Liam Pickering has declared, ending talk of a move west and leaving the Eagles to chase other targets in the AFL trade period.
Pickering, of Bravo Management, shut down the speculation on AFL Trade Radio on Wednesday 7 October. His comments were reported by The West Australian and Zero Hanger, and were flagged in AFL.com.au’s Trade Talk live coverage.
“Gryan’s not going to West Coast; I can tell you that,” Pickering said. “He’s not going; it’s not happening. That’s all I’ll say.”
Asked whether another club could come into the picture, Pickering said: “Well, he’s not going to be an Eagle, let’s put it that way. He won’t be at West Coast, and it is unlikely he will play for anyone but Geelong next year.”
Why Miers was linked to the Eagles
Miers was linked to West Coast after completing a medical at the club last week on his way to Europe for his off-season, Zero Hanger reported.
He had also been seen as a possible key to unlocking a deal for St Kilda’s Rowan Marshall, with the clubs at loggerheads over the ruckman’s value, according to Zero Hanger. Geelong has already been busy this off-season, landing Toby Greene in free agency and Jordan Ridley in a trade with Essendon.
West Coast turns to Trent Rivers
With Miers off the table, the Eagles are expected to turn their attention to Melbourne’s 2021 premiership player Trent Rivers, according to Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary, as reported by Zero Hanger.
Rivers has been strongly linked to a move to Western Australia and, despite being contracted, has been encouraged by the Demons to explore his options. West Coast is also interested in his Melbourne teammate Jack Viney, Zero Hanger reported.
Neither Geelong nor West Coast had commented on Pickering’s remarks at the time of writing.
