Absent Molo tells Dragons he wants immediate release

Francis Molo is pushing for a release from his St George Illawarra Dragons contract and hasn’t clocked in for Red V training for at least 10 straight days through this 2025 NRL preseason.

Molo reportedly told “those close to him” he has played his last game for the Dragons.

The joint venture has already granted him leave but is also preparing to hand the veteran forward a breach notice for not fronting training. Particularly strange is that Molo hasn’t voiced any particular issues with coach Shane Flanagan; he just continues to stay away from the club-mandated sessions.

“There’s been informal talks… regarding a release. The Dragons have intimated that they won’t give him one, at least initially, but he also hasn’t been at training,” journalist  Michael Carayannis said on Thursday morning on SEN radio. “He’s intimated to those close to him [that] he doesn’t want to be at the Dragons anymore.”

The 30-year-old just signed a new two-year extension in 2024, making the whole initiation even more bizarre.

The Sporting Base would guess there’s another club talking to him – though no mail there yet.

The Dragons have been willing to let players go in the recent past: Zac Lomax, Ben Hunt, and Jack Bird, some of the biggest stars at the club, were all shown the door after antagonising for releases last year.

The expectation here is the club will demand Molo stay for his contract term.

Molo’s younger brother Michael also still has a contract with the Sydney/Wollongong club.
