According to Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report on Tuesday, the Philadelphia 76ers signed Montrezl Harrell of Tarboro, North Carolina to a two-year contract worth $5.2 million. The 76ers become Harrell’s sixth National Basketball Association team following two seasons with the Houston Rockets, three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, and one season with the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2021-22, Harrell split his time with the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets.
Harrell played 46 games last season with the Wizards and 25 games with the Hornets. A center, Harrell was traded from the Wizards to the Hornets for Ish Smith, Vernon Carey Jr. and a second round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft on February 10. In 71 games in 2021-22, he averaged 13.1 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, two assists per game, a field goal percentage of .645, three point percentage of .235, and a free throw percentage of .716.
In 2019-20 while with the Clippers, Harrell was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. That season he averaged 18.6 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game, 1.1 blocks per game, a .580 field goal percentage and a .658 free throw percentage.
When Harrell joined the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent and signed a two-year contract worth $19 million on November 22, 2020, he was ranked as the second best player by The Sporting Base to switch teams in NBA free agency prior to the start of the 2020-21 NBA season. The number one player on the list was Danilo Gallinari of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy, who signed with the Atlanta Hawks. Gallinari, who is now with the Boston Celtics, also made headlines this past week, as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Italy against Georgia in 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifying on August 27.
