According to Daniel Valente of The Score on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers have signed tight end Logan Thomas of Lynchburg, Virginia to a one-year contract. The financial terms of the contract have not been released.
The 49ers are the fifth National Football League franchise Thomas has played for. He previously played one season with the Arizona Cardinals (2014), two seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2017 and 2018), one season with the Detroit Lions (2019), and four seasons with the Washington Commanders (2020 to 2023).
In 94 NFL career games, Thomas has 219 catches for 2002 receiving yards and 16 touchdown catches. In 2023, he had 55 catches for 496 receiving yards and four touchdown catches.
Thomas was actually drafted as a quarterback by the Cardinals out of Virginia Tech. He was taken in the fourth round, 120th overall. In his rookie season, Thomas completed one touchdown pass for 81 yards to wide receiver Andre Ellington of Moncks Corner, South Carolina in a 41-20 Cardinals loss to the Denver Broncos on October 5, 2014.
Thomas was then a quarterback on the Miami Dolphins practice squad in 2015 and with the New York Giants practice squad in 2016, before making the decision to change to tight end in 2017. With the 49ers, Thomas will be the backup to George Kittle of Madison, Wisconsin. This past season, Kittle had 65 catches for 1020 receiving yards and six touchdowns. In 2020, The Sporting Base ranked Kittle as the third best tight end in the NFL, only behind Westlake, Ohio native Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and Scottsdale, Arizona native Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens.
