2026 Hot Danish Stakes Review: What The Jockeys Said

Lazzura and Tommy Berry dug deep to hold off Gerringong by a half-neck in the Group 2 Toyota Forklifts Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill for Chris Waller, with Surf’s Up 2¼ lengths away third. Here’s what the jockeys said.

It is always important to hear what the jockeys say after the race, as you can forgive a horse’s bad run or even find a winner next start, so head to the post-race comments below.

FIRESTORM (Tim Clark) – 8th

They went too slow and sprinted home. Got away from her.

MODELLA (Kerrin McEvoy) – 7th

She was in good form. Just the wide draw and we had to get back. Hard task from there.

DARK GLITTER (Anna Roper) – 6th

Track a little firm but she was good.

ARABIAN ROSE (Ben Thompson) – 5th

Really good in defeat. Running home in 32.9 makes it hard for us in the second half and the order didn’t change. In hindsight would have been better off being sent forward and it’s a different race. Made it hard off that sprint home to catch them.

TUILERIES (Tyler Schiller) – 4th

I thought her run was terrific. Just impossible to make up ground on the leaders.

SURF’S UP (Jason Collett) – 3rd

Ran well.

GERRINGONG (Nash Rawiller) – 2nd

Great effort. Everything went to plan. She got a lovely uncontested lead and into a beautiful rhythm. Her kick from the 550m was something special. She had the tenacity to really have another dip at the 100m. Full credit to the winner. It’s a seasoned G1 horse. But I think our mare has really announced herself today.

LAZZURA (Tommy Berry) – 1st

We had it very easy for the first half. We went across the line and Nash says ‘that was a good race because we had to fight the whole way down the straight.’

The margin doesn’t reflect the performance but the time does [32.9]. We quickened up really well from the 600m, I put in a good kick at the 400m and the 200m. And Nash just stuck with me from there. His is a very good filly on her day.

Any horse with class can run up a quick 600m if you get an easy time. She has done it well. Would have enjoyed a bit more give in the track than what is there today. She is a winner and that is what she does.
