Evaporate and Nash Rawiller showed tenacity late to win the Group 3 Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill for Ben, Will & JD Hayes, beating Zambardo by a long neck with Plymouth a length away third. Here’s what the jockeys said.
It is always important to hear what the jockeys say after the race, as you can forgive a horse’s bad run or even find a winner next start, so head to the post-race comments below.
IMPERIALIST (Sam Clipperton) – 13th
He is just racing in poor form at the moment.
ATHANATOS (Luke Cartwright) – 12th
He was slow out. When he wanted to grab the bridle, I tried to roll the dice to get in. They just outsprinted him today.
LORD PENMAN (Jason Collett) – 11th
He has run good but we drew wide, went a long way back in a slow run race.
MR CHAPLIN (Andrew Adkins) – 10th
He ran OK. Just no pace in the race that set up for him. Galloped on past the line really really well.
LINEBACKER (Zac Lloyd) – 9th
Not an excuse in the world. Just wasn’t on song today.
TUXEDO (Opie Bosson) – 8th
Probably didn’t help himself over-racing. Ran home OK.
VERONA ROSE (Kerrin McEvoy) – 7th
She ran well. The dash home didn’t really suit her.
WELCOMETOTHESHOW (Craig Newitt) – 6th
He ran enormous. Lost sight of the bunny at the half mile when the speed came out of the race. Hit a flat spot then through the line really solid.
BRINDAVAN (Ben Thompson) – 5th
Great run. He came off a PB on a Heavy 10. Mother Nature unfortunately had the track dry. If it’s wet he can run really well in a race like this. Honest 5th in defeat.
DECLICHY BOULEVARD (Tommy Berry) – 4th
They steadied up a bit too much in the middle stages. All in all, it was probably a bit too firm for her today. She has won on Good 4 tracks but it is pretty close to a Good 3. Just didn’t let down the same.
PLYMOUTH (Tim Clark) – 3rd
He ran really well. Was strong late. Just probably needed a bit more genuine tempo through the middle stages.
ZAMBARDO (Dylan Gibbons) – 2nd
Full credit to Ben and the team for getting him back from the little set back he had. He has gone enormous. Can’t believe one ran him down.
EVAPORATE (Nash Rawiller) – 1st
I was really honoured to be able to say that I rode for CS back in the day as an apprentice, put me on quite a few times all around Victoria and city tracks. Obviously David, the late Peter Hayes, Tony (McEvoy) when he took over. I don’t think there has been anyone else but there may have been. To be riding winners now for these boys, it’s not just a privilege but an honour. A great thrill.
He knuckled coming out of the gates. Honestly he’s the weirdest customer you’d ever come across. I think he half shocked himself into putting himself into a great spot. He dead-set gave a scare for one stride. The way he came up running, he definitely gave himself a fright.
He got into a lovely spot. I wanted to bide my time for as long as I could. When Linebacker started dropping off before the corner, the run presented and for a horse who hasn’t really got the job for some time, he showed a lot of tenacity over the last 100m.
