Chris Waller-trained colt Central Europe broke his maiden in style under Jason Collett in the $1 million Group 3 myPlates Callander-Presnell (1600m) at Randwick, beating Why So Hard by three and a quarter lengths with stablemate Lafite third. Here’s what the jockeys said.
It is always important to hear what the jockeys say after the race, as you can forgive a horse’s bad run or even find a winner next start, so head to the post-race comments below.
GRIDLOCK (Tommy Berry) – 10th
Rode him upside down and it didn’t work.
REVENGEANCE (Tim Clark) – 9th
Track was too hard for him. Didn’t run a mile.
SPALPEEN (Alysha Collett) – 8th
I thought she stuck on well. Going to be suited to a distance like this.

MEMORISE (Andrew Adkins) – 7th
Might have come to the end of her preparation. Just found that last 150/200m a little bit tough. Has done everything right. Will be nice horse next prep.
ROCKS OR DIAMONDS (Regan Bayliss) – 6th
She is one to look out for the Autumn. Will make a nice horse.
OMOLONG (Kerrin McEvoy) – 5th
Had a nice run. Will strengthen next preparation.
HARRYBEGOOD (Dylan Gibbons) – 4th
He has gone fantastic. I just think at this point of his career a mile sees him out.

LAFITE (Zac Lloyd) – 3rd
Ran well. Probably lacks a bit of star power like the winner. He’s honest.
WHY SO HARD (Tyler Schiller) – 2nd
I thought he was terrific. When the winner went past, he actually lifted and went again. I think he is still building something. A lovely horse in the making.
CENTRAL EUROPE (Jason Collett) – 1st
It’s just executing it correctly. He still did a few things wrong mid-race which Darren alluded too. He got to the outside of the stablemate at the 1000m (speaking nicely too him), I was starting to get impatient.
It gave me a lot of confidence. James spoke to me on Wednesday about him. Even just the way Darren spoke to me about him before the race today. Everyone knows about the ability he has. He just needs to get it right. This was a good stepping stone.
