2023 NFL Super Bowl Preview: Our Expert Tips & Staking Plan

Just 0ne more game to go, the Super Bowl is here and with it the end of a fantastic NFL season. The Chiefs take on the 49ers in Las Vegas in what has the potential to be one of the greatest games we have seen.

I will likely be adding some more picks before the games so make sure to check back.

The Quarterbacks

Patrick Mahomes may be the only person with a realistic chance of catching Tom Brady’s seven rings. A win tonight would put him at three and put him into a very small group to have that many rings.

Mahomes is maybe the most naturally talented passer to ever step foot in the NFL. He does things almost every game that it feels like nobody else on the planet could do. There is perhaps no bigger difference maker at any position, on any team.

Brock Purdy, on the other hand, is maybe the most ordinary quarterback in the league. He does not possess many truly elite skills, he was picked with the very last pick of the draft and many still doubt him despite him leading his team all this way.

But there may be no better quarterback out there for the system the 49ers run. Purdy is efficient, protects the ball and gets it into the hands of his many, many playmakers when and how it is needed. He may not go to another place and have anything like this success, but in this system, he may very well be the absolute best person to run it.

If one quarterback is going to put his team on his back and win this game singlehandedly then it is likely to be Mahomes, but do not count Purdy out. He is incredible at what he does for this team and could very well be holding the Lombardi Trophy and who knows, even a Super Bowl MVP, later today. The Coaches

Andy Reid has always been considered a good coach, but it wasn’t until he got to Kansas City that he finally got the ring his career had deserved. A third ring later will cement his place among the greats of the game.

Kyle Shanahan  is considered one of, if not the greatest offensive coach in the game. His playcalling and design is second to none. However, he has a big hump to get over in this game s his Super Bowl history is a problem. He was the OC for the Falcons in their disastrous collapse from 28-3 ahead against the Patriots and has come up short in the Super Bowl as a head coach when his team lost to tonight’s opponents four years ago.

Both of these coaches are elite though, and will have something up their sleeve in the big game. But it feels like Shanahan really needs this one more than Reid does.

The Offences

Both teams have fantastic offences, but there is no doubt that San Francisco has more weapons.

Christian McCaffrey won offensive player of the year this week, but Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle make this team really special. All of them are a threat to score a touchdown at any time, from anywhere on the field. All are so versatile and Shanahan is bound to have been cooking something up just for this game.

The Chiefs offence has not hit the dizzy heights we have come to expect from them this season. Travis Kelce has not looked himself, but has carried an injury for much of the season. He may well be at his healthiest for this game after a bit of rest since the Championship game, so do not expect him to let the team down.

At receiver they have tried lots of people. Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mecole Hardman and others have played bit parts, but it is rookie Rashee Rice that has emerged as the only real star in the group. He has come up big many times for the Chiefs already this season and don’t be surprised if he breaks some rookie records in tonight’s game.

Both teams have some of the best offensive lines in the league, and with the pass rushers they will be going up against here, they will be needed. Members Can View Hub Here Members Can View Hub Here

The Defences

The 49ers certainly have bigger names on defence. Nick Bosa perhaps the most standout of that incredible bunch, but there have been times this season where they just seemingly could not get it going. They seem to have found stopping runners particularly had, and with Isaiah Pacheco looking strong, they will need to find a way to slow him down or things could get ugly.

San Francisco will always find a way to rush the passer, but if they do not find a way to stop Pacheco and a resurgent Clyde Edwards-Helair then it could be where this game is decided.

Kansas City are not known for their defence, but in a season where the offence hasn’t always been firing, the defence has stepped up. They completely shut down MVP Lamar Jackson last time out and if they can get the blitz working, they could cause Brock Purdy all sorts of issues. Members Can View Hub Here Members Can View Hub Here

The Picks

This game is incredibly close. Only a two point spread really means this could go either way. I am choosing to trust what I have seen all season, and that is that the 49ers are the one, truly special team in the league right now.

They have a defence that can win a game on its own, but an offence that is so unique and dangerous that it is hard to ever slow them down, let alone stop them.

It is hard to ever pick against Patrick Mahomes, but this feels a lot like the Buccaneers Super Bowl match up, where I favoured Tampa Bay because there are just more scenarios where I see the 49ers coming out on top.

This game has every chance of going down in the history books with two great teams, but I think Kyle Shanahan gets over the hump and cements himself as one of the great NFL coaches. Members Can View Hub Here Members Can View Hub Here
