Four American men reach third round of 2022 Wimbledon
June 30, 2022
One of the most notable stories of the 2022 Wimbledon on Wednesday was the success of the American men. Four Americans reached the third round–20th ranked John Isner (the 2018 Wimbledon semifinalist), the 23rd ranked Frances Tiafoe, the 30th ranked Tommy Paul, and 2016 Olympic men’s doubles bronze medalist Steve Johnson.
Isner, who is 37 years of age, and is from Greensboro, North Carolina, beat two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray of Great Britain, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in the highest profile Wimbledon match of the day. This was Isner’s first career win over Murray in nine matches. Isner will next face the Italian, Jannik Sinner, the 10th seed, in round three.
Frances Tiafoe of Hyattsville, Maryland, beat German qualifier Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. Paul of Voorhees Township, New Jersey beat Adrian Mannarino of France 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, and Johnson of Orange, California beat British wildcard Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

One American woman also advanced. The 28th seed, Alison Riske-Amritraj of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania defeated Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
In other notable women’s tennis results, two more top 10 players were knocked out. The second ranked Anett Kontaveit of Estonia lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 to Germany’s Jule Niemeier. Kontaveit was recently diagnosed with coronavirus and has really struggled with her energy in the last couple of months. Meanwhile, the 10th seed, and reigning United States Open champion Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, lost 6-3, 6-3 to Caroline Garcia of France.
Meanwhile, one top-10 men’s seed lost on Tuesday. Casper Ruud of Norway, the reigning French Open finalist who I thought would be eliminated in the first round, was beaten 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to Ugo Humbert of France.
