Day 16 Olympic Preview – Aussies in action 8/8

On the final day of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Australian athletes will compete in the men’s marathon and track cycling. Australia will finish in sixth place in the overall medal standings. At 46 medals, they have 10 fewer medals than Japan, which is in fifth place at 56 medals, and are seven medals ahead of Italy, which is in seventh place with 39 medals.

In the men’s marathon (8 a.m. AEST), there will be three Australians competing among the 106 marathon runners in the start order. Brett Robinson of Canberra will be wearing bib number 1096, Liam Adams of Melbourne, will be wearing bib number 1075, and Jack Rayner of Melbourne will be wearing bib number 1094. Only one Australian Olympian has ever won a marathon medal. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Lisa Martin of Gawler won the silver medal in the women’s marathon.

The medal opportunities for Australia on Sunday will come in track cycling, as there are three Aussies competing. In the women’s Omnium, Annette Edmondson of Adelaide will be a strong medal contender. Her past achievements include being a bronze medal in the women’s Omnium at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and being a gold medalist in the women’s Omnium at the 2015 World Track Cycling World Championships in Yvelines, France. In the Omnium, the women’s scratch race will be at 11 A.M., the tempo race will be at 11:45 A.M., the elimination race at 12:26 P.M., and the points race at 1:25 P.M.

In the men’s Keirin, the final will be at 1 p.m. AEST. Matthew Glaetzer of Adelaide and Matthew Richardson are in the quarterfinals. Richardson previously won a bronze medal in the men’s team sprint at the 2019 World Track Cycling Championships in Berlin. Glaetzer meanwhile has won four medals at the World Track Cycling Championships, but is still looking for his first Olympic medal.
