Dallas Cowboys Still Lead The NFC East With A Losing Record

The Dallas Cowboys lead the NFC East at the moment with a record of six wins and seven losses. It appears the only reason why Jason Garrett is still the head coach of the massively underachieving Cowboys is that the Philadelphia Eagles (5-7), the Washington Redskins (3-9) and New York Giants (2-10) are worse.

On Thursday, the Cowboys went into Soldier Field in Chicago as a three-point favourite. They played nothing like a favourite and for a third straight week picked up an L as Chicago won by a touchdown, 31-24.

The first drive for the Cowboys went fine. Dallas marched down the football field in 17 plays and was capped off with a two-yard touchdown run by running back Ezekiel Elliott.

After that, the Bears put together a string of 24 unanswered points and completely annihilated the Cowboys’ top 10 ranked defense. What was even more puzzling was how terrible the Cowboys offense was during the middle quarters. Dak Prescott was completely out of sync with his receivers and just getting a simple first down was a significant challenge for Dallas.

It has been rumoured for a while that Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is on the hotseat. Chicago’s offense has struggled themselves throughout 2019 as they have only 243 points, the third fewest point total in the entire NFC. It is safe to say more was expected from running back David Montgomery, who only has 680 rushing yards in 13 games, and Trubisky has generally struggled to find that go-to receiver.

On Thursday however, Chicago’s offense was flawless. Trubisky completed 23 of 31 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns, along with 63 rushing yards and another major score. Montgomery had 86 rushing yards, and Allen Robinson became Trubisky’s go to receiver. He only had five catches but had two touchdown receptions.

Chicago improved to 7-6, but despite being above .500, they are not in a good position to make the playoffs. They are still behind the 9-3 Green Bay Packers and 8-4 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North. The Vikings hold the final wildcard spot in the NFC at the moment.
