Pistons deliver historic wins as an underdog

Heading into the week, the Detroit Pistons had lost 10 straight games on the road to begin the 2022-23 NBA regular season, and things were simply not looking very bright in Motown. Prior to their game in Denver against the Nuggets on Tuesday, they had lost seven games in a row, and were understandably a 12-point underdog.

However, the Pistons came through thanks to 22 points from Bojan Bogdanovic in a 110-108 upset win. Then on Wednesday, Bogdanovic led the Pistons in scoring again with 23 points as Detroit beat the Utah Jazz 125-116.

In the process, the Pistons became the third team in NBA history to win on back-to-back days as double-digit underdogs. Just like their game in Denver, the Pistons were 12-point underdogs in Utah.

The other two teams to accomplish the feat were the 2012 Orlando Magic and the 2015 New York Knicks according to ESPN. On December 2, 2012, the Magic defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 113-103. Then on December 3, 2012, the Magic defeated Golden State Warriors 102-94. On November 20, 2015, the Knicks defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 93-90, and then on November 21, 2015, the Knicks upset the Houston Rockets 107-102.

With the wins, the Pistons are now at five wins and 15 losses. On Friday, they will face a Phoenix Suns squad as a 12.5 point underdog.

This is Bogdanovic’s first season with the Pistons. So far in 2022-23, he is averaging 20.7 points per game, four rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, a field goal percentage of .500, three-point percentage of .400, and a free-throw percentage of .882. If the Pistons continue to struggle, do not be surprised if the Pistons look to deal Bogdanovic at the trade deadline to a contender.
