V8 Supercars Cancel Three Rounds Of Racing
March 19, 2020
Supercars has become the latest casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, with the next three rounds of the 2020 Championship postponed.
The Tasmania Super400, Auckland Super 400 and Perth SuperNight events will not go ahead as planned.
Last weekend’s Melbourne 400, which was to be run alongside the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park, was shut down after just one day.
In a statement, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said the series has begun exploring options to replace the Melbourne 400, and reschedule the next three rounds.
“Supercars’ priority is to deliver the 14-round 2020 championship for our fans and partners, irrespective of the dates,” he said.
“We anticipate that we will be able to formalize and communicate this plan within the next few weeks.”
Seamer has confirmed the Bathurst 1000 will go ahead on its scheduled date.
Teams and drivers have expressed their disappointment at the extended break from racing, but have backed Supercars decision.
Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Chaz Mostert: “In all seriousness, safety does come first and we all need to band together in the tough times!”
Team 18 driver Mark Winterbottom: “I’m absolutely shattered not to be racing, but at the same time, I understand the reasons why. Hopefully, we can get back on track as soon as possible as I am missing it like crazy!”
DJR Team Penske: “We have taken direction and advice from Supercars management, government and health experts and we look forward to being able to return to doing what we love soon.”
Kelly Racing: “We understand that many of you will be disappointed by this news, however the health and safety of our staff, fans and partners is our number one priority. We support Supercars during this difficult time and look forward to getting back on the track soon.”
In the meantime, Supercars will launch an ESeries Championship, which will see a number of its drivers race their cars in a virtual world.
It will be broadcast on Fox Sports, Kayo and Twitch.
In addition, a new docuseries featuring Penrite Racing will be launched.
The Inside Line – A Season with Erebus Motorsport follows the team and drivers David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale through the 2019 Supercars Championship.
It will be available from March 30 on Foxtel, Fox Sports and Kayo.
Supercars is now expected to return to the track for the Winton Super400 on June 5.
