Washington Football Team signs running back Jaret Patterson after going undrafted

For one day during the 2020 College Football season in the United States, running back Jaret Patterson made not just college football headlines, but football headlines. On November 28, Patterson tied the National Collegiate Athletic Association record for most touchdowns in a single game (eight) as the University of Buffalo Bulls hammered the Kent State Golden Flashes 70-41.

Scoring eight touchdowns in one game is simply mind-boggling. Patterson accomplished the feat during a game where he also had 36 carries for 409 yards.

Even though Patterson had a magical game in college football this season, the 21-year-old from Glenn Dale, Maryland went undrafted. However, on Monday, Patterson came to terms with the Washington Football Team on a contract according to John Keim of ESPN.

One may ask how did Patterson go undrafted? Well, the answer seems to come down to his size, as Patterson is only 5’8”, and 195 pounds. Still, the Washington Football Team took a chance, and Patterson is now part of a running back core that includes Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic, Peyton Barber, and Lamar Miller.

After signing with Washington, Patterson received a surprisingly positive message from Barry Sanders, the second-best running back of all-time. In a tweet, Sanders wrote,”wishing you and your family the best of luck in DC. Us little guys have to have each other’s backs.” Sanders meanwhile was also 5’8” while starring with the Detroit Lions.

Patterson not just had an outstanding game for the Bulls against the Golden Flashes. He had a solid season. In 2021, Patterson had 141 rushes for 1072 yards and 19 touchdowns. In three seasons with the University of Buffalo, he had 636 carries for 3884 yards and 52 touchdowns.
