DeChambeau Dominates FedEx Cup Playoffs

Bryson DeChambeau has put together an outstanding past two weeks of golf to take out the opening legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. His first victory was at the Ridgewood Championship Course in the Northern Trust Tournament where he defeated Tony Finau by four strokes. He backed that up a week later with triumph in the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, defeating Justin Rose by two shots.

DeChambeau closed out the tournament with 67 on the final round to join the likes of Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy as recent winners.

The golfer known on the tour as “The Scientist”, has now won three times from his last nine appearances and reflected on his weekend.

“Consistency has been a big thing for me,” said DeChambeau.

“I’ve been trying to get that week in and week out, and I was able to kind of figure something out last week on the putting green and that’s kind of progressed me to move forward in the right way.

All the little stuff I do in my book, if I keep doing the numbers right and I keep executing the right shots, I can’t do much more than that. If I keep going that route, I’ll be hard to beat.”

Rose sits perfectly poised in third position on the FedEx Cup standings along with Australian Cameron Smith who has consecutive top three finishes in the tournament. Smith made a late charge with birdies on 15 and 16 but DeChambeau held his nerve towards the end of his round with Smith finding a water hazard on the 18th.

On the comeback trail, Tiger Woods was at one stage only three shots from the lead on the final round but again his putting let him down. He went from a potential top five finish to round out his weekend in a tie for 24th position. Walking towards the club rooms Woods refused to speak to media as he left the course frustrated with his performance.

With the win, DeChambeau now has four PGA titles under his belt at only 25 years of age and becomes just the second player since the FedEx Cup’s inception to win the first two legs, the other was Vijay Singh back in 2008. No player has won three events in the same playoffs, something the quirky DeChambeau will have two chances at accomplishing before the tournament finishes.

Our attention now turns to Pennsylvania where round three of the FedEx Cup will be held at the Aronimink Golf Club on the weekend.
