LPGA to honour Annika Sorenstam with her own tournament

According to Cameron Jourdan of Golfweek on Thursday, the LPGA announced plans earlier this week by honouring women’s golf superstar Annika Sorenstam with her own tournament. The event will take place in Tampa Bay, Florida and be known as The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican.

Sorenstam of Bro, Sweden, is one of the finest female golfers of all-time. The 51 year-old was a 10-time major champion. She won the 1995, 1996, and 2006 United States Women’s Open, the 2001, 2002 and 2005 Chevron Championship (known at the time as the Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, California), the 2003 Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham in Lancashire, England, and the 2003, 2004, 2005 Women’s PGA Championship.

Even though Sorenstam does not play as much these days on the LPGA Tour, she remains extremely active in the game of golf. In 2020, she was named the new president of the International Golf Federation.

The new LPGA tournament is in the same American state where the PGA Tour has honoured one of its legends since 2007. A decade and a half ago the Arnold Palmer Invitational was created in Bay Hill, Florida. Palmer was a seven-time major champion as he won the 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964 Masters,  the 1960 United States Open, and the 1961 and 1962 British Open.

Tiger Woods has won the most Arnold Palmer Invitationals as he was victorious in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Two Australians have won the Arnold Palmer Invitational as Jason Day of Beaudesert won in 2016 and Marc Leishman of Warrnambool won in 2017. The defending Arnold Palmer Invitational champion is world number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey. Scheffler also made golf headlines this month when he was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year. The other titles Scheffler had in 2022 were the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the World Matchplay Championship. When he beat Kevin Kisner in the World Matchplay Championship in Austin, Texas, Scheffler reached number one in the world.
