Uncertainty over Lopez and Kambosos fight

The highly touted boxing bout between Australian lightweight George Kambosos Jr and American Teofimo Lopez is again in jeopardy.

Lopez is the current IBF/WBA/WBO lightweight champion and has been offered the opportunity to fight the Australian down under but is reluctant to travel into enemy territory.

There are many elements at play here, Lopez’s manager David McWater is concerned over the 14-day mandated quarantine which could see the American cut weight in a hotel room. McWater suggested that Lopez may vacate his IBF belt if the fight was to be moved from the States.

Promoted by Triller, the fight was meant to take place in May this year but was moved to June 5, and then to June 19. Within a few days of the new date, Lopez tested positive for COVID which has now halted plans.

In this whole process, Kambosos has been critical of his opponent, speaking about the carelessness surrounding the pandemic and in particular wasting valuable time. It resulted in Kambosos flying his pregnant wife to America.

Whether the fight takes place or not is up to the legal battle between Lopez and Triller which has eventuated with the changing of dates and location.
