PORT ADELAIDE POWER VS CARLTON BLUES – SATURDAY 30 MARCH, 4:40PM, ADELAIDE OVAL

Port Adelaide stunned AFL followers with an empathic 26-point win over Melbourne last weekend. It was the four debutants that shone bright showing youth and energy to a previously stagnant side. Justin Westoff kicked five majors for the Power while Tom Rockliff gathered a massive 44 disposals.

Carlton kicked off the season on Thursday night against Richmond. Trialling by 33 points a quarter time, the Blues were competitive for a half of football and showed promise before being overpowered by the Tigers in the final term. Patrick Cripps was outstanding along with fresh faces Nic Newman, Will Setterfield and second year player Harry McKay.

This week:

This encounter will mean a lot to both sides. For Port Adelaide it will be the opportunity to build on their Round 1 victory and continue to give their fans something to be excited about. Justin Westhoff will line up in game number 250 and really stepped up last week in the absence of Charlie Dixon.

For Carlton they will be looking to back up their solid performance against Richmond. They will need to stop the Powers outside run and limit the impact of Tom Rockcliff, Travis Boak and Sam Powell-Pepper. The Blues will need improved performances from the Curnow brothers and Mitch McGovern up forward.

Team News:

Port Adelaide: No change

Carlton: IN – Cameron Polson
OUT – David Cunningham (inj)

Supercoach Tips:

  • Port Adelaide – BUY – The junior brigade of Willem Drew, Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma all debuted in impressive fashion and are priced nicely between $100k-200k.
  • Carlton – BUY – Will Setterfield and Michael Gibbons both looked comfortable in the navy blue against Richmond and scored well for affordable priced players between $100k-$150k.

Betting Insights:

  • Carlton has lost 18 of its last 19 day matches.
  • Carlton has won the third quarter in each of its last six day matches against Port Adelaide.
  • Robbie Gray has kicked two or more goals in each of his last six appearances against Carlton.

TIP: Port Adelaide too impressive last week and should continue on their winning way.

GEELONG CATS VS MELBOURNE DEMONS – SATURDAY 30 MARCH, 7:25PM, GMHBA STADIUM

Geelong were impressive defeating Collingwood in a hard-fought bout last week by seven points. It was a scrappy affair but nonetheless enjoyable to watch as the lead continued to changed throughout the game. It was Tom Hawkins who was able to seal the deal for the Cats in the dying stages of the game with a nice goal on the run.

Tim Kelly was Geelong’s best with 31 possessions, he was assisted with solid performances from Tom Stewart, Patrick Dangerfield and Luke Dahlhaus.

Melbourne were ordinary and completely outclassed by a young Port Adelaide side last week. They were run off their feet and allowed the Power 93 more uncontested possessions. Max Gawn was roughed up by Port Adelaide throughout the game and Nathan Jones dropped an easy mark which turned the tide in the last term.

Christian Salem, James Harmes and Jake Melksham were outstanding for the Dee’s in an otherwise poor performance.

This week:

In front of a home ground at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong will look to continue their fantastic winning record. The Cats will be looking for redemption following an elimination final defeat at the hands of the Dee’s and prove that last weeks win over Collingwood was no fluke.

Melbourne will need co-captains Jack Viney and Nathan Jones to stand up this week after being down on form against Port. Max Gawn by his own admission failed to handle the physicality of his Round 1 opponents. If the above mentioned players can rise to the occasion, the rest of the midfield will follow.

Team News:

Geelong: IN – No change

Melbourne: IN – Jay Lockhart, Steven May & Kade Kolodjashnij
OUT – Corey Wagner (omit), Marty Hore (omit) & Charlie Spargo (omit)

Supercoach Tips:

  • Geelong – BUY – Charlie Constable & Jordan Clark were both popular picks prior to Round 1 and performed accordingly with scores of 85 and 69 respectively.
  • Melbourne – BUY – Angus Brayshaw topped the clearance list for the Demons last week. His disposal was only ordinary at 57% efficiency. Will be able to improve off his Round 1 score of 89.

Betting Insights:

  • Geelong has won 20 of its last 21 Saturday games at GMHBA Stadium.
  • Melbourne has lost nine of its last 10 Round 2 away matches.
  • Tom Hawkins has kicked three or more goals in each of Geelong’s last 10 Saturday night matches as a favourite.

TIP: Geelong to win at home, Melbourne were very ordinary last week.

WEST COAST EAGLES VS GWS GIANTS – SATURDAY 30 MARCH, 5:10PM, OPTUS STADIUM

West Coast will play their first home game of the season when they come up against GWS on Saturday afternoon at Optus Stadium. The Eagles looked in control early in their game against Brisbane but the Lions proved too strong managing to pull back a large deficit to come home victors over West Coast by 44-points.

GWS were dominant over Essendon and made them look second rate in their 72-point win. It was an all round solid hit out with the Giants too good in all areas of the ground.

This week:

The Eagles welcome back Josh Kennedy which will strengthen an otherwise inexperienced forward line. Expect West Coast to come out firing after the unveiling of their premiership flag.

GWS face a tough challenge ahead venturing to the West. They are fielding a solid team and will rely heavily on Jeremy Cameron to kick a winning score. Stephen Coniglio and Lachie Whitfield were in good touch last week and will need to back it up against the reigning premiers.

Think West Coast will be too strong at home.

West Coast: IN – Josh Kennedy & Josh Smith
OUT – Jack Waterman (omit) & Jarrod Brander (omit)

GWS: IN – Matt Buntine & Nick Haynes
OUT – Harry Perryman (inj) & Toby Greene (inj)

Supercoach Tips:

  • West Coast – Watch– Dom Sheed had 38 touches in Round 1 for a Supercoach score of 144. Has held down a pivotal role in the Eagles midfield, will be interesting how they setup when Andrew Gaff returns from suspension.
  • GWS – Captain Selection – Stephen Coniglio registered 31 possessions against Essendon last week which included 10 tackles and three goals. Set to have a massive season and should be considered as captain of your side.

Betting Insights:

  • Each of the last nine Saturday matches at Optus Stadium have been won by the favourites.
  • Josh Kennedy has kicked four or more goals in each of West Coast’s last three Round 2 home matches.
  • Elliot Yeo has recorded 30+ disposals in three of West Coast’s last four regular season matches against GWS.
